What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that heavily relies on evidence-based treatments that help people restore, maintain, and maximise their physical strength, function, motion, and overall well-being by addressing underlying physical issues. In Australia, all physiotherapists are fully qualified via completion of a Bachelor (or equivalent) degree. Practicing physiotherapists must be registered yearly with AHPRA and can all be found on the register of practitioners.

What conditions can physiotherapy treat?

At Physiotherapy Active, we can treat a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries, pre and post-surgical rehabilitation, chronic pain, neurological conditions, and healthy aging.

Will my insurance cover physiotherapy?

Coverage for physiotherapy varies depending on your insurance plan. It is best to check with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your coverage. We are a preferred provider with Bupa, Health Partners, and Medibank Private, as well as being part of the “More for Muscles” program with HCF. Being a preferred provider means you will receive a greater rebate for your treatment, relative to a non-preferred provider.

My GP gave me a care plan, can I use that and how much does it cost?

Your GP may assign up to five visits per 12 months to physiotherapy. These visits are Medicare-subsidised, similar to visiting the GP. There may be a gap to bring the price in line with our concession rates. You will receive the rebate into the account you have nominated with Medicare.

Do you see patients for work injuries (Return to Work) or for motor vehicle accidents (CTP)?

We have vast experience seeing patients with workplace or motor vehicle injuries. We understand the complex nature of these injuries and are well-versed in navigating with insurance companies.

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?

You do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist. We are first-contact practitioners.

What should I expect during my first physiotherapy session?

During your first session, the physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment of your condition, including your medical history, physical examination, and any relevant tests. They will then develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.

How long does a physiotherapy session last?

We typically do 40-minute initial consult visits, followed by 20-minute subsequent consults, or 30 minutes for two issues. However, we may spend more or less time based on what is required. NDIS or home-care packages will likely use a full 60 minutes initially. Our exercise-based sessions are 45 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the condition being treated, the severity of the issue, how long you’ve had the issue, and the individual’s response to treatment. Your physiotherapist will aim to provide an estimate based on your specific situation.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?

It is recommended to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for easy movement and can be adjusted to expose the body part being treated, such as pants that go up over the knee. Depending on the area being treated, you may need to expose certain parts of your body.

Can physiotherapy help with chronic pain?
